My ego has received the smackdown it needed: I'm having a hell of a time patching these themes. While it works fine with the default right sidebar, I can't figure out what I have to change to make the images work when the sidebar is on the left.

ETA: Actually, no, I'm good. Further examination of the layout layer tells me it works just the way I thought it did, and I should have trusted my instincts on this one.
