Notes: Header image tile for Angel Cake was made by me, so it's totally free. And while these are official submissions and not drafts, it's become apparent while sharing some of these around my idea of acceptable contrast maybe differs from the norm. They aren't meant to be high contrast layouts, but I don't want them to be very low contrast either, so if it seems like an issue on preview, please give a shout. I'll probably patch myself, so I can tweak colors a touch.

Request for Feedback!

So, there was some discussion in the comments of the latest dw_news post, and in the #dw-dev channel, about implementing a simple base color theme across ALL layouts we have (and all ones we will have in the future, theoretically). Me being me, I offered to give it a go myself. I did a quick mock-up on TR last night, and ported it across a few layouts to start. I'd really like to know how useable they are for other people, as it's designed to be a simple style for seeing the basic layout of each style without having to try and compare across colors as well (ie, looking at Bases in a purple theme, and Five AM in a pink one, and trying to see the underlying structure). And I am a test case of one, so *g*

Goals with this:
-make the underlying structure of a style easily apparent
-mimic the most commonly used scheming for a style (ie, all the themes for style A use colored title backgrounds, while most of the themes for style B don't)
-be accessible for the greatest number of users
-be nice enough that someone might want to actually use it as a theme *g*

So far I've just been doing stuff on the Recent Entries page, and I know I'm missing comment-styling, but these are drafts.

Resources for patching S2 color themes

I made an entry over at dw_dev, but I figured it was worth linking here, too - two handy scripts and workflow tips (and some custom-highlighting for gedit users editing .s2 files) for making patching S2 color themes easier. This automates a lot of the more tedious steps, to make it faster!

I've made a lot of tweaks since the last version so I'm putting this up for a last round of testing. If you spot any display issue tell me, please. There are a couple of issues I know about but I've probably missed other things.

Please note that this uses an open source font embedded via Google fonts. It can make the page load more slowly. Also you won't see it if you've blocked Google scripts via NoScript or similar extensions.

Searching for themers and testers

Two things (and apologies to members of dw_volunteers who saw item one already)

1) I am very happy mucking around in code and writing patches and all that good stuff, but I am terrible at QA-type things. Like, embarrassingly terrible. I also have a smaller monitor than most, which means doing preview shots is difficult for me. And I would love to have people who are good at those sorts of things who'd like to help out with it, particularly as I'm going to try to get into some of the layouts in our bugzilla backlog (I just picked one up that's been there since 2010).

So! Your mission, should you choose to accept it:
-Play with style options and make sure they all work (or tell me 'Momiji, I just broke the layout with this option' if they don't)
-Play with the color settings, and make sure they color what they're labeled for (ie, 'entry links' shouldn't change the color of things on the sidebar)
-Take preview pictures! (or giving me screenshots at a size I can process down - I'm on a widescreen netbook, so my monitor is small)

2) Two of the styles I patched were only submitted with one color theme - Motion and Strata. It'd be awesome to get some more color themes for them before they make it to the commit list.

Everything is patched on my 'Hack, so it'll be just like using the customize settings on DW proper - no code knowledge necessary.

EDIT: ...it occurs to me that a link to my DreamHack would be useful here.

Patchers Wanted!

I'm not doing a post-push stats post because only a few new themes have gone live since the penultimate push but several themes for existing styles have been submitted since then and are looking for patchers:

~~8 for Abstractia, 2 for Brittle, 9 for Crossroads, 7 for Marginless, 3 for Modular, 3 for Paletteable, 4 for Practicality and 1 for Sunday Morning.~~

Most of these are straightforward nothing-fancy themes and are about the easiest thing you can patch on DW. If you want to give patching a try but need pointers or help, you can comment here, PM me or go to #dreamwidth or #dreamwidth-dev and ask around. I've already said this several times but no experience or particular knowledge is required to go into theme patching. For real. *g*

Draft layout, Call and Response

Call and Response is my first layout, and I'm looking for feedback/testing/bug reports on the layout itself. I have only tested it so far in Firefox, and I know it won't work right now in IE7.

I have several themes built already, and I'll link to a few here to aid you in seeing how the layout works. Also, as of now and for a few days, carene_waterman is a live preview of the Raw Sugar theme as a work in progress for this layout.

Call and Response is an elastic/fluid responsive design remix of Tabula Rasa. Explaining what that means is a bit complicated, but I can't ask you to look it over if you don't know what you're looking at.( Read more... )

Was playing around with my own colour theme tonight, decided I didn't want to keep this for myself, but wanted to throw it as a submission because I do like it, after all. Also to break the dry spell of themes that's happened with the school year, and whatnot.

core2 variables!

So there are lots of nice pre-defined variables in core2 for us to use in coding themes, but you kind of have to dig into the core2 code (or see what other people have done) to find what's available. I figured I'd pull out the font and color ones (which I think are what come up the most for just-CSS styling) so they'd be a little more accessible.

Keep in mind that if there isn't a specific font or color property that you want, you're better off making a new one one, rather than doubling up or using a variable for a use other than what it was defined for. Moving them around ends up with confusion and frustration for end-users in the wizard, as it means what the description says the color does doesn't end up being what it actually does.

New Style Draft - Heads Up

So it seemed from some of the discussion on other layout comms that users wanted something like LJ's Expressive/Mixit styles, which for those unfamiliar with them, are fixed width and have pretty header images.

Now, I know we don't do fixed-width-by-default here, but I decided I'd try my hand at something that could be set between fluid and fixed width very easily, and supported header images above the header text, as well as behind it. The base once again is branchandroot's Paletteable because apparently it's my go-to for a clean starter code *g*

Source is here, and you can see it live here, though the back-end stuff is where the magic (and thus the feedback-needed is).

Stuff I plan to do for sure:
-make the sidebar background extend the length of the page (and in fact thought I had, up until, uh, right now)
-Style the month headers on archive-page-by-year to look like the subject headers on entries.

Stuff I am waffling about:
-right now the image input for the header is the same as the background header-image, with a toggle between the two. I'm not sure if it should stay like that, or if there should be an option to have header background /and/ a banner-header.
-Not sure what other CSS tweaks I should make because... I am not always an ideas person *g*

Post-push Stats

So many good news, guys, because you've been amazing!

Let's start with styles: 54 ones have been submitted and 31 are live (57%). There are two new styles, Abstractia and Marginless, both of which could use more themes. Five other styles have been claimed and are being actively worked on so there's a good chance there will be more new styles in upcoming months. \o/

And now themes: over 1,000 have been submitted --yeah, you read that right!-- and 877 are live (87%). With this push, we get 73 new themes in 11 different styles (including Abstractia and Marginless).

Many thanks to Chiming, Delladea and Momijizukamori for all the work they did patching new styles and themes.

This is the first time I've ever done a theme, and I was hoping for some feedback. I like color a lot: I tried to strike a balance between that and still being readable and not a Myspace-esque eyesore. Let me know how well I succeeded, and if this might be worth submitting?

I also did some color contrast checking as advised here, and all was okay except for this:

If links aren't underlined, "the accessibility guidelines state that the contrast ratio between the link color and the surrounding text should be at least 3:1."

I couldn't seem to get that without getting very dark, which would make it hard to read against the background. Just looking at it seems to me it should be different enough, at least the teal main link color vs. the main text, but any advice?

ETA: Okay, I made a couple more tweaks and am ready to submit, I emailed the CLA in a little bit ago, so it should be all good to go! (If I need to make a new post, I can do that . . .)
